FAQ

Different Types of High Bay Lights

High Bay lights are very powerful and are designed to meet the unique requirements of large areas. Metal halide (MH) lamps and high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps have been the first choice for many years. These lamps use very different techniques compared to traditional incandescent or fluorescent lamps. One side effect of the technology is that the most effective shapes for MH and HPS lamps are round or circular. This shape optimizes the service life of the lamp and maximizes the amount of light in a particular direction.

Advances in lighting technology have led to more modern types of luminaires suitable for high-bay applications. In particular, industrial LED lamps are now generally superior to MH and HPS lamps in most respects, including maintenance costs, energy efficiency, and lighting quality. They have the added advantage of being suitable for a variety of shapes, not just the rounds where MH and HPS lamps are restricted. The most common additive shape for industrial LED lights is rectangular or bar-shaped, where the lights are arranged in a linear shape, increasing coverage and uniformity.

What is the difference between a low and high bay light?

High-bay lighting features a deep reflector used to direct the light down from a high ceiling. High-bay fixtures also produce a diffused light, which helps to reduce glare. Low-bay lighting has a shallower reflector plus a lens, which diffuses the light outwards from a lower ceiling.
