Ambient lighting with recessed lights typically has a spacing of 6 to 7 1/2 feet (for 8-foot ceilings) or 7 to 8 1/2 feet (for 9-foot ceilings). The distance from the first row of lights to the wall is half that distance.

How do you decide how many recessed lights you need?

Formula: Total square feet x 1.5 = Total wattage required. Total wattage divided by 60 watts (or any wattage you choose) = total amount of the recessed can lamp. Example: 240 square foot room x 1.5 = 360 divided by 60 (number of bulb watts I want to use) = 6 recessed lights are required.
